  • You never forget your first and your last Coast Guard unit. I came aboard Sebago in 1968 fresh out of the Coast Guard Academy. I was 22 but looked 16. It didn't take long to learn responsibility in the CG. I was the Gunnery Officer, boarding officer, and deck watch officer. I gunnery division office, and was lucky to have a great chief, Novie Palmer. Chiefs are always keeping young ensigns out of trouble. Capt Goodwin was a tough Commanding Officer, but he deserved everyone's respect. I was sorry to hear that he crossed the bar a couple of years back.
