Richard B. (Dick) Lathrom, of Independence, MO died February 21, 2009 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Blue Springs, MO.
Visitation will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday, February 25, at the McGilley & Sheil Funeral Home at 11924 E. 47th St. The Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, February 26 at St. Mark’s Catholic Church at 3736 Lee’s Summit Road. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
Dick was born May 30th, 1920 in Texas County, MO to Riley A. Lathrom and Florence (Foster) Lathrom. He married Barbara Peters on June 14, 1941. They would have celebrated 68 years together in June, 2009. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Eugenia (Jeannie) Shepard. He is survived by his wife, Barbara; daughter, Bev (Gene) Putthoff; sons, Rick (Cathy) Lathrom, Dennis (Nancy) Lathrom, Donald ( Peggy) Lathrom, Joe (Maureen) Lathrom; son-in-law, John Shepard and sister Mabel Doyle of California. He is also survived by 20 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.
Dick served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II aboard the USCGC Sebago. He worked at Armco Steel for 40 years, retiring as a Senior Melter in the Electric Furnace Department in 1981. He was a member of the St. Vincent DePaul Society, active in St. Stephen’s and St. Mark’s Catholic Churches. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, wood-working, family gathering and card games.
