Harry J. “Frenchie” Chappius of Perryville died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2013 at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau. He was 92.
He was born Aug. 9, 1920 in Perryville, the son of August and Cecilia (Weinkein) Chappius. He was married on April 25, 1944 to Vivian B. Bendel of Perryville, who survives.
Other survivors include one son, Bruce (JoAnna) Chappius of Perryville; step-grandchildren, Penny Allen of Perryville; and Buddy Gene (Julia) Allen of Pevely; and three step-great-grandchilren, Jordan Allen, Tori Allen, and Rachel Allen, all of Pevely; nephew, Don Chappius; and niece, Helen Heady.
Harry worked at International Shoe Factory. He was a United States Coast Guard Veteran, serving during World War II. He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, V.F.W. Post 4282, American Legion Post 133, and was a 3rd Degree Knight of Columbus.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Carl, Elmo, and Floyd; and sisters, Lenita Weber, Zita Post and Earlene Franklin. Memorials are preferred to Ladies of Charity, Masses or charity of choice.
Family will receive friends in the Gathering Space of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church on Monday, Feb. 4 from 9 a.m. until service time at 11 a.m. The funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church with the Rev. Milton Ryan, C.M. officiating. Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery with graveside military honors courtesy of the American Legion Post 133 and the Delta Team.
